Mariners sign Kelly Shoppach
The Mariners have signed catcher Kelly Shoppach to a one year deal worth 1.5 million according ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick via twitter. Shoppach had stat lines of .233/8/27/.309/.425/.733 in 76 games between the Red Sox and Mets last season. He will join Ronny Paulino in a fight to become the team’s new backup catcher during spring training.
Knowing Wedge, he’ll deprive Montero of playing time by giving these worthless, Right handed catching veterans playing time. If we’re going to sign a catcher, sign a platoon partner for Montero. I would’ve rather had us sign Brian Schneider.
Schneider just retired today according to MLBTradeRumors.
