Predicting the NL All-Star Starters

C- Evan Gattis, Braves-.269/12/32/.329/.593/.922. Gattis leads all NL catchers in:home runs (12), SLG (.593) and OPS (.922). This pick may come as a shock to most people, but Gattis deserves the chance to start. He was thrust into the starting role when Brian McCann was injured to start the season. Gattis had left baseball for a couple of years and then came back in 2010. He was invited to Spring training with the Braves and hit his way onto the club. Yadier Molina and Buster Posey are playing well, but my vote goes to Gattis

1B- Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks- .337/13/46/.419/.604/1.023. Goldschmidt leads NL first basemen in: batting average (.337), home runs (13), RBI (46), SLG (.604) and OPS (1.023). He is an early favorite to win the NL MVP with the hot start he is off too. Goldschmidt has the stats to be the leading vote getter in the National League.

2B- Matt Carpenter,Cardinals- .313/4/19/.394/.452/.846. Had to do some research for this position. Thought about going with Brandon Phillips, who has stat lines of .296/9/45/.347/.481/.829 or Marco Scutaro .329/1/13/.380/.429/.808. But Carpenter stats won out. Carpenter has 43 runs and has been one of catalysts for a very good Cardinals’ offense. He is leading all NL second baseman in: runs (43), OBP (.394) and OPS (.846). He has come out of left field to be consistent threat in the lineup.

SS- Jean Segura, Brewers- .350/8/23/.389/.551/.940. Segura leads all of the National League in batting average and hits. He is in the top 10 for the NL in: stolen bases, OBP, SLG and OPS. Segura has only played in 99 career games, so this could be the first of many All-Star starts for this emerging star.

3B- David Wright, Mets- .277/7/30/.374/.462/.836. This is the most muddled position to pick from. There is no clear cut favorite to be the All-Star starter. It came down to the player that leads all third basemen in the most offensive categories. David Wright leads all third baseman in:runs (29), triples (4), stolen bases (11), OBP (.374), SLG (.462) and OPS (.836). Pablo Sandoval lead in the three categories,so by default David Wright gets the nod.

LF- Carlos Gonzalez, Rockies- .305/14/36/.385/.592/.977. If this was the All-Star game for the month of April, Justin Upton would be starting or Dominic Brown for the month of May. but this is overall stats for the season so far. Carlos Gonzalez leads all NL left fielders in:runs (45), hits (65), triples (3), batting average (.305), SLG (.592) and OPS (.977).

CF- Carlos Gomez, Brewers- .325/10/27/.369/.584/.953. Gomez was once considered a top prospect, but he never lived up to that potential on the Mets or the Twins. He seems to be finally living up to that potential this season with the Brewers. Gomez is leading NL center fielders in:home runs (10), batting average (.325), SLG (.584) and OPS (.953).

RF- Carlos Beltran, Cardinals- .300/12/34/.342/.516/.857. This was another position were it was a push between Beltran and Hunter Pence. Pence leads NL right fielders in: runs (32),hits (66) and stolen bases (9) while Beltran leads in: home runs (12), SLG (.516) and OPS (.857). It came down to Beltran having slightly better stats than Pence .292/9/30/.335/.500/.835.
