Candidates For The American League Cy Young Award

Max Scherzer- 24 starts, 17-1 record, 2.85 ERA, 161.1 IP, 181 K, 0.91 WHIP, 6.1 H/9, 0.8 HR/9, 2.1 BB/9, 9.9 K/9, 4.76 K/BB, 5.0 WAR, 5.0 pitching WAR, 19 QS, 6.04 RS per start, .192 BAA, 2 scoreless starts and 15 starts going 7 innings or more. Scherzer leads the American League in: wins, WHIP and tied for first in quality starts. There a couple of stats on this sheet that trouble me. He hasn’t had a lot of scoreless starts and is averaging 6 runs a start. When you have a 6 spot a game from the offense it is really easy for a pitcher to rack up the wins.

Felix Hernandez- 25 starts, 12-5 record, 2.28 ERA, 173.2 IP, 178 K, 1.08 WHIP, 8.0 H/9, 0.6 HR/9, 1.7 BB/9, 9.2 K/9, 5.39 K/BB, 5.9 WAR, 5.9 pitching WAR, 19 QS, 4.24 RS per start, .240 BAA, 7 scoreless starts and 16 starts going 7 innings or more. Hernandez leads the American League in: starts, ERA, innings pitched, tied for first in WAR and quality starts. The hits per 9 innings are a little high for Hernandez and batting average against is pretty high for the pitchers on this list. Felix has been his usual dominant self and his numbers are reminiscent of his Cy Young season in 2010.

Hiroki Kuroda- 24 starts, 11-7 record, 2.33 ERA, CG, SHO, 154.2 IP, 110 K, 1.02 WHIP, 7.5 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 1.7 BB/9, 6.4 K/9, 3.79 K/BB, 4.9 WAR, 5.0 pitching WAR, 17 QS, 3.33 RS per start, .226 BAA, 9 scoreless starts and 14 starts going 7 innings or more. Kuroda has the most scoreless starts in the American League. He has been the most consistent starter in the Yankees’ rotation and has numbers that warrant some discussion in the Cy Young Award conversation.

Chris Sale- 22 starts, 8-11 record, 2.73 ERA, 4 CG, SHO, 158.1 IP, 167 K, 1.05 WHIP, 7.5 H/9, 0.8 HR/9, 2.0 BB/9, 9.5 K/9, 4.77 K/BB, 5.9 WAR, pitching WAR 5.9, 18 QS, 2.73 RS per start, .224 BAA, 3 scoreless starts and 17 starts going 7 innings or more. Sale leads the American League in: complete games and tied for the lead in WAR among pitchers. He has gone an unbelievable 17 starts of 7 innings or more this season. If Sale could receive more run support he could be seen as a more viable contender for the award? There have been pitchers that have won the award with not much run support in year’s past. Zack Greinke (’09) and Felix Hernandez (’10) won the award in back-to-back years with little to no run support from their respective teams.

Yu Darvish- 23 starts, 12-5 record, 2.64 ERA, 153.2 IP, 207 K, 1.00 WHIP, 6.0 H/9, 1.1 HR/9, 3.0 BB/9, 12.1 K/9, 4.06 K/BB, 4.8 WAR, 4.8 pitching WAR, 16 QS, 4.74 RS per start, .186 BAA, 7 scoreless starts and 12 starts going 7 innings or more. Darvish leads the American League in: strikeouts, hits per 9 innings, batting average against and strikeouts per 9 innings. He has put up some great numbers, but needs Felix Hernandez to falter to end the season in order to receive more traction in the Cy Young. Hernandez has similar, but better stats than Darvish has.  It looks like the award will be decided between Scherzer and Hernandez with Darvish a distant third at this moment in time

Great Pitching Performances From Last Night

Several pitchers around the MLB had great performances on the mound last night. Most of the pitchers play for well known teams and have had great pitching performances in their respective careers, while one pitcher is just starting out his MLB journey. Below is a list of all the pitchers that shined on Monday night.

Yu Darvish- 8 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 15 K and a win. This was the second time during season that Darvish has one hit the Astros. In the second game of the season, Darvish carried a no-hitter into the 9th until Marwin Gonzalez hit a single up the middle to end it. Darvish had a no-hitter going with one out in the 8th until Carlos Corporan hit a solo home run to right. This was Darvish’s 5th time striking out 15 batters in one game during 2013 season.

Andrew Albers- 9 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 K and a win. Albers has pitched very well in his first two MLB starts for the Twins. He pitched 8 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in his first start against the Royals and followed that start with a 2-hit gem against the Indians last night. Albers has amassed 17 1/3 scoreless innings to start out his big league career.

Hiroki Kuroda- 8 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 7 K and a win. This was Kuroda’s 9th scoreless start of the season. He lowered his home ERA from 1.74 to 1.54 after last night’s outing. Kuroda has been the most consistent starter in the Yankees’ rotation and deserves some consideration for the Cy Young award this season.

Cole Hamels- 9 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 9 K and a win. Hamels has been struggling for most of the season, but he returned to his old form in last night’s start against the Braves. He also hit a triple in last night’s game.

Mat Latos- 8 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 9 K and a win. Latos had a pretty dominating start against the Cubs last night, but he wasn’t the only pitcher that shined in the game. Cubs’ starter Travis Wood went 8 innings as well. Latos has had strong outings in his last three starts each of them lasted 6 innings or more and he has only given up two earned runs in those three starts.

Travis Wood- 8 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K and a loss. Wood had another solid outing last night. He went toe-to-toe with Latos, but gave up a home run to Brandon Phillips that was the difference in the game. This was Wood’s 8th start of going 7 innings or more of the season.

Chris Sale- 9 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 6 K and a win. This was Sale’s 3rd complete game of the season. He kept the powerful Tigers’ lineup in check, except for a solo home run by Miguel Cabrera and an RBI single by Bryan Pena. Sale has gone 8 innings or more in 7 starts this season.

Jhoulys Chacin- 8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6 K and a win. This is the second time Chacin has had an 8 inning start in his last three starts. Chacin is turning into the Rockies’ staff ace. He needs to win one more game to establish a new career high in wins.

Garrett Richards- 8 IP, 7 H , 2 ER, 3 K and a loss. Richards has been used both as a reliever and starter this season. He has gone back to the rotation and has quality starts in his last three starts. Richards kept the Yankees’ lineup in check until giving up a solo home run to Curtis Granderson that turns out to be the difference in the game.

Hiroki Kuroda vs Homer Bailey

Now that the Winter Meetings are over its time to get back to the pitchers bracket. The current matchup is between 17th seed Hiroki Kuroda and 48th seed Homer Bailey. This matchup will take place in the Seattle portion of the bracket.

Hiroki Kuroda stats- 96 stats, 40-40 record, 618 innings pitched, 224 earned runs, 3.26 ERA, 487 strikeouts, combined WAR over the last 3 seasons 11.4 and 63 quality starts. Postseason stats- 2 starts, 0-1 record, 16 innings pitched, 5 earned runs, 2.81 ERA, 14 strikeouts and 2 quality starts. Kuroda has no All-Star appearances or awards during this 3 year span.

Homer Bailey stats- 74 starts, 26-20 record, 449 innings pitched, 204 earned runs, 4.09 ERA, 374 So, combined WAR over the last 3 seasons 3.1 and 42 quality starts. Postseason stats- 2 appearances, 1 start, 0-0 record, 9 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 1.00 ERA, 12 So and 1 quality start. Bailey has no All-Star appearances or awards during this 3 year span.

I would give the edge to Kuroda in this matchup. His regular season stats are far and away better then his opponent. The only stat that Bailey has an advantage in is winning percentage. He has a record of 6 games games above .500 while Kuroda is right at .500. The two pitchers have pretty similar stats in the Postseason. Bailey only has a start in the playoffs going 7 innings giving up 0 runs while striking out 10. Kuroda was also dominant in his 2 start giving up 5 runs over 16 innings pitched. Please comment on who you think wins this matchup.

Yankees Re-Sign Hiroki Kuroda

According to Buster Olney of ESPN the Yankees have re-signed Kuroda to a 1 year deal. Terms of the deal have not be announced yet but it could be in the 16 million dollar range. Kuroda posted a record of 16-11 with a 3.32 ERA and 20 quality starts. The 16 wins were a career high for Kuroda. He was the most consistent pitcher for the Yankees last season. This could be Kuroda’s last contract in the big leagues as he plans to finish his career in Japan.

Notable Players Not Playing for Japan in the WBC

5 notable players from Japan’s championship teams have decided to not play in this year’s WBC. The players are M’s pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, Ranger pitcher Yu Darvish, Brewers outfielder Norichika Aoki, free agent pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and free agent outfielder Ichiro Suzuki. This a huge blow to the Japanese team but they will probably find new players that can fill the roles of these players. Japan has developed some great players and now a new crop of the players will be showcased this time around for the country.
